I’ve had this idea for a while and the time has come to put it
in motion… So here’s the pitch…
I want to put together an album of music in which none of those involved
ever play in the same room during the writing process. (Yes, I know
this is not an original idea Pigface, The Postal Service, etc. have
all done this) Anyway, To facilitate this I have a selection of individual
tracks, mostly programmed drum tracks and some with other instruments…that
should you decide to participate I will send you or may be found below.
You play or sing what ever you want to the tracks and record your part.
Even if you cant finish a song that's ok, a riff or progression will
create a starting point for others to work off of. It has to be a decent
quality recorded track. (If you’re local and need help with the
recording part let me know and we can set up some time) I don’t
care about styles, what instrument you play, etc. Bonus points for random
instruments like banjos, and clarinets and such…anyway, when finished
with your part you send back your recorded part (preferably as a wav
or mp3). We will also need a lead sheet, chord progression, tab, or
at least know what key you are playing in (which ever method is easiest
for you) so each new person receiving your track doesn’t have
to waste too much time figuring out what the heck you did on the tracks…Anyway,
once say a bass player gets me their tracks I will send it on to a guitarist,
keyboardist or vocalist, etc…until we have a completed song…
I don’t care what level player you are as long as we can get a
decent track out of you. If you can only play three chords then play
them…if you’re a virtuoso then prove it. Obviously, Songs/Riffs
must be original compositions not existing songs. I do ask that you
play to the song a little bit as we are trying to make music not noise,
but with that said feel free to push some musical boundaries since the
music to noise ratio is subjective…overall I want this to be fun…and
as most of you know most of the music I like is usually considered noise...
When completed, I will list all players/authors for each track; list
links to any websites you have, and otherwise cross promote your personal
work as best I can. I hope to make this a recurring project if it works
out.
I know we are all busy, but in order to facilitate an album being done
this decade, once you have a track to work on, please do not take more
than one month to complete and send back your tracks. This wont happen
overnight, so if you sign on just be aware, that you have to produce
your tracks in a relatively timely manner…we can be a little flexible
when life gets in the way but lets hope for the best there.... With
that said, though you can choose the number you want to work on if it’s
only one song, say so, if you want ten songs thrown your way, say so…it’s
your choice how much effort (or lack thereof) you want to put in…I’m
hoping to make this an ongoing project…
Please Note (the fine print):
1. If you participate you will have to sign a contract that is full
of legal speak and acknowledges this as a “work-for-hire”
(but with no pay)…meaning no money…you wont get author royalties
or mechanicals and such even if it sells. (See #3). In the event that
you upload a track without signing a contract then, you will be considered
to have implied consent and be bound to the terms of the contract by
the act of the upload.
2. I reserve the right to add effects, slice and dice and otherwise
f-up your track in the mixing and mastering process.
3. I do hope to release the project for sale in mp3 format on itunes
and amazon and such. By agreeing to participate you understand that
all the sales, royalties and mechanicals from this project will go to
charity. Those of you with a performing rights orgs this will be considered
a “work-for-hire” (with a zero dollar payment), author and
publishing registrations will remain with my company and the proceeds
from this project go to charity.
4. The project/”band” name is up to me, as is the album
title, but I welcome suggestions…I’ll arrange or create
the cover art as well. (Not to be rude, but I don’t want suggestions
here, I’ll manage just fine…)
5. If you participate I will need a bio worthy, print quality photo
before the songs are officially released. And as part of the contract
you give me license to use said photo for publicity purposes.
6. Alternate tunings (like open G, etc are fine) but....When you do
your tracks please be in tune and stick to the the standard A=440.
Ok, any other comments, questions, or thoughts
are welcome. As I am sure you all know other musicians I want as many
participants as possible and therefore feel free to encourage others
to participate (yes, they’ll have to sign the contract too) Please
respond here or to the email below if interested in participating (even
those of you I have already talked to in person) and list number of
tracks interested in working on and what instrument(s). If you have
a strong preference for only doing lead guitar solos or just a rhythm
track or what not, please advise me of those preferences as well. you
can get in touch with me here or at rmrmusicstudios @ gmail.com …Thanks…
